WHAT WHIPLASH TREATMENT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AT THE CHIROPRACTOR?
Whiplash is one of the top auto accident injuries we treat here at Oregon City Chiropractic and Auto Injury. It occurs when your neck moves swiftly in back-and-forth motions, such as if you have to slam on your brakes or if someone drives into the back of your car.
There are multiple whiplash symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Discomfort in the neck, shoulders, lower back, or arms
- Hearing a ringing sound
- Fuzzy vision
- Trouble focusing or remembering things
- Agitation
- Exhaustion
The question is: if you have whiplash, how is it treated? In this blog, we’ll explain some of the most common whiplash treatment methods that can help provide relief for your symptoms. Let’s begin.
MOST COMMON WHIPLASH TREATMENT METHODS
Chiropractic care can benefit all types of whiplash pain. Here are some of the main whiplash treatments:
#1: FLEXION-DISTRACTION METHOD
When the joints in your neck move out of place, it can cause a significant amount of pain. However, by adjusting your spine via the flexion-distraction method, we can restore the joints to the correct position and treat any herniated discs.
Worried about the pain? Don’t be afraid. These adjustments are gentle and painless at Oregon City Chiropractic and Auto Injury. We know you are in pain, and we wish to make the relief part easy breezy for you–not more intense.
We will start by repositioning the joint in question the way it is supposed to go while moving the table to help with your body positioning. No matter the extent of the injury, we will use a gentle touch to ease the tightness in the affected area and restore your body back to its normal alignment. This can remove the tension from the discs and nerves in the spine, reduce any bulging discs, and help with neck pain.
#2: MUSCLE STIMULATION
When your body is in pain from whiplash, you will likely feel constricted and unable to do a full range of motion. To help with your whiplash symptoms, our chiropractor will stimulate the muscles and invoke relaxation by stretching them out.
Now, when you hear the word “stretch,” we realize you might feel a little hesitant, considering that you’re in pain. However, the stretches we recommend for whiplash are low impact and will not hurt. They can also help alleviate your pain and improve your mobility.
During the stretches, we will assess your pain level. We may also apply some pressure with our fingers to reduce the tension in your muscles. If the pressure is ever too much, we will be happy to adjust that.
#3: TRIGGER POINT THERAPY
One of the hardest parts about whiplash is that it can cause a lot of pain in specific parts of the body. This can include discomfort in your neck to your arms and hands, as well as numbness.
Trigger point therapy is a fantastic way to target those painful areas, or knots, in the body. We will look for tight spots within the muscles, applying pressure with our fingers to help with the tension.
You can think of this like a deep tissue massage on your trigger points. We will talk to you as we perform the technique to see if your symptoms are improving or if we need to try another method.
